Description
Built in 1511 by Edward Stafford, third Duke of Buckingham. Thornbury Castle was once owned by Henry VIII, who stayed there in 1535 with Anne Boleyn. You can now enjoy the colourful history, rich furnishings, ornate oriel windows, suits of armour, panelled walls and large open fireplaces, and sleep comfortably in one of the 27 carefully restored bedchambers that retain many period details. The castle is acclaimed for its food, which features dishes such as Gloucestershire Old Spot pork, fresh south coast fish, local seasonal vegetables and cheeses and organic free-range eggs. A good wine cellar also includes its own wine from grapes grown in the grounds. You'll often see the chef picking herbs from the garden. Personally guided tours will introduce you to little-known areas of this magnificent building as well as the famous places nearby. A von Essen hotel.
